Tongue-Tie Surgery: Prevention and Management of Complications - Lessons Learned and Final Perspectives

Across the globe there has been a statistically significant increase in numbers of surgical procedures performed for the remediation of ankyloglossia (tongue-tie).  With any surgical procedure, even if considered 'simple,' there are risks that are associated with it. Unexpected and untoward outcomes during or after surgical intervention for tongue tie is well documented and of major complications are of low incidence but may be on the rise, many go undocumented. Some of these potential complications may be negatively life altering and potentially life threatening.  This lecture will take a deep dive with regard to an evidence based approach to understanding the types of complications ranging from common to rare, and minor to severe and life threatening.  Personal experience as well as in depth literature review and accepted evidence based guidelines on prevention and treatment will be discusses.  It will be throughly discussed on how the collaborative approach to the surgical management of these patients is imperative and has been shown to improve outcomes and reduce the incidence of complications and improving outcomes.
