The use of lasers in oral frenulum surgery, including techniques, clinical protocols, and the management of complications
The use of high-power lasers in lingual frenectomy has expanded the surgical treatment options for ankyloglossia across different age groups. However, technology alone does not determine the success of the procedure.
Accurate diagnosis, anatomical knowledge, careful selection of laser parameters, mastery of the surgical technique, and appropriate postoperative follow-up are essential for safe and predictable outcomes.
In this presentation at the Tongue Time Congress – Switzerland, the main clinical aspects related to the use of different high-power lasers in lingual frenectomies will be discussed, considering laser-tissue interaction, different wavelengths, bleeding control, cutting precision, thermal effects, and the precautions required for appropriate parameter selection.
Adverse events and complications related to lingual frenectomies will also be addressed, including potential contributing factors, professional training, prevention strategies, early recognition, and clinical management.
Through the presentation and discussion of clinical cases, situations such as bleeding, alterations in the healing process, adhesions, fibrosis, the need for reintervention, and other postoperative complications will be explored.
The aim is to demonstrate that the safety of lingual frenectomy does not depend solely on the technology employed, but rather on the combination of appropriate case selection, scientific knowledge, professional training, mastery of surgical technique, and adequate patient follow-up.
