Beyond the Frenulum: Tongue Function, Airway and the Multidisciplinary Patient Journey
Tongue-tie is increasingly associated with difficulties involving feeding, speech, oral function, breathing and sleep. However, effective assessment and management require clinicians to look beyond the appearance of the frenulum and consider how the tongue functions within the wider craniofacial and whole-body system.
In this presentation, Dr Suraj Vatish explores the relationship between restricted tongue mobility, oral posture, nasal breathing, airway development and sleep quality across different stages of life. He discusses the importance of function-led assessment, appropriate case selection and identifying contributing factors before considering intervention.
The session also examines why a tongue-tie release should not be viewed as an isolated procedure. Preparation, rehabilitation and collaboration between dentistry, lactation, speech and language therapy, myofunctional therapy, osteopathy, physiotherapy, paediatrics, ENT and other relevant disciplines may all contribute to a more complete care pathway.
Through clinical experience and practical examples, Dr Suraj will highlight the importance of multidisciplinary communication, realistic expectations and individualised treatment planning. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of how to recognise possible oral-function concerns, when referral may be appropriate and how collaborative care can support patients from infancy through to adulthood.
